Training Your Dog Should Be Done The Gentle Way

No matter what the size or breed, every dog has a similar mindset. Understanding how dogs think and communicate is key to successful training. Read on to find out how to communicate better with a dog by using the information that provides some help.

When doing crate training, train your dog incrementally rather than trying to do it all at once. Once your puppy feels comfortable in the open crate, close the door and offer the dog a treat. Use small increments of time, and build them up as your puppy or dog becomes more relaxed with the process. If the puppy becomes upset, you may be progressing too quickly.

Keep your dog calm when you enter the room. Playtime with them is great, however, they must learn to be calm when you’re entering a room. Don’t acknowledge your dog when you enter the room. By doing this, you will be able to create a controlled environment in which you determine when and how play time begins.

Once your pet is able to progress through training sessions, you’ll be able to loosen the reins somewhat. This balance between obedience and freedom will provide your dog with a very satisfying life. Just be careful not to overdo it on the freedom initially as it can set your canine training efforts back.

Maintain brief training sessions. Dogs have a short attention span, and keeping the training sessions short and sweet prevents them from becoming a boring chore your dog dreads. If you want to continue, then give dogs a quick free play break.

Primary reinforcement is key during puppy training. Primary reinforcement uses the things that your dog loves as rewards for positive behavior. This may mean giving food items as treats or scratching the dog’s tummy. Doing this will show your dog alternatives for obtaining what he wants appropriately.

Your dog needs to understand that ‘no’ means they need to stop what they are doing right away. It’s important to discover positive methods of reinforcing your dog’s training. Saying ‘no’ is not a good command, and the dog won’t know how to react. Every situation and dog is different and their training should be tailored accordingly.

This understanding of how dogs think and process information is vital to training them. By gaining this knowledge, a person will be able to train their dog effectively. If one learns about their dog then one will be able to train him better.
