Taking the time to train your dog is one of the most important things you can do for him. Training your dog is something that will be repaid to you over the future years because you will have a happy and healthy dog who respects your family and listens to you when necessary. By reading this article, you will begin to understand exactly why training your dog is so essential.

Training your pet to roll over very easy. Just remember to have treats in hand. First, place your dog in the “down” position. Then, position a treat near the floor to one side of him, raise it up and move it over to the opposite side. He will follow the treat by rolling over. Be sure to say ROLL OVER as your dog is rolling. Eventually, he will learn to perform the trick upon command. Never become frustrated if it does not happen right away. Once he does learn how, he will be a celebrity among other dogs.

Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise in addition to scheduled training and potty break sessions. A dog that is physically active and has the chance to exercise regularly is more capable of learning during training sessions. A dog that gets to exercise and have fun will be much easier to manage.

Use your dog’s name often to get and keep his attention. Use the name repeatedly during the first weeks after your dog’s arrival, so he pays attention to you when he hears the name. The best dog names are ones that are short and are different from other commands.

Do not wear out your new puppy with an excessive training regiment. A puppy has a short attention span and limited energy to focus, so keep your sessions brief and as positive as possible. If you overdo it, he is likely to forget everything he learned and simply remember the experience in an unfavorable light, making it that much harder for you the next time you attempt the training.

Vary your tone of voice when going through training sessions. Each type of command should use a different type of tone. You need to talk to them in a firm tone of voice if you are correcting them.

You can use a spray bottle filled with water as a mild aversive to prevent inappropriate chewing. This will teach your dog that there are certain behaviors that are unacceptable. Soon your dog will stop these behaviors and you’ll have a playful yet obedient dog.

Praise is key to reinforcing good behavior during training. Get excited, smile, and give treats to help your dog relate the good behavior to something positive. Just be sure you never reward your dog after a bad behavior.

In conclusion, it’s a wise investment to train the dog. An aggressive dog can cause property damage and strain relations between family members. Use the methods found in this article to train your dog properly and make them a beloved member of the family.
