Bringing home a new puppy is a joyful day. The following few weeks are when frustration may set in. You’ll wonder how you got yourself in such a mess. When your dog is properly trained, it’s much easier to rekindle the joys of your relationship. This article is filled with useful tips you should use to train your puppy.

When training a puppy to use a crate it is important to take your time and start with only a few steps at a time. Once they have grown accustomed to being in the crate with the gate open, try closing the gate and feeding them small treats through the crate. In the beginning it is important to only leave the dog in the crate for a few seconds. After a while you will be able to leave them in the crate for longer amounts of time. If they get upset, it’s too fast.

When house-breaking your puppy, choose a specific phrase to use when it’s time to go outdoors. Each time you let your dog out to relieve himself, use a phrase such as “go potty” so that he associates going outside with going to the bathroom.

When getting closer to a dog, move slowly and let the dog smell your hand. This lets the dog get accustomed to your smell and he will be more trusting towards you. As the dog begins to trust you, he will more likely follow your commands.

Accidents are a part of training your puppy to go potty outside. Any accidents should be cleaned up as soon as possible to help with the training efforts. You pet will smell the urine and try to urinate there again. Many pet stores or big box stores sell products that help to eliminate the odors from pet accidents.

Training your dog requires equal parts of patience, love, and dog treats. The ideas above are sure to pave the way toward a lasting, rewarding friendship between you and your pet. It won’t happen overnight, but by being consistent in your training, you will create a much happier home for both of you.
