Cats are excellent pets for the whole family but they require some attention. Cats are entertaining and can keep rodents away. They are usually unappreciated heroes that keep many critters away from your home.

Don’t let your cat near drape cords. If the cat becomes caught in a loop, they could choke to death. This is incredibly dangerous as it could be fatal for your cat. Hide the cords for safety sake.

Make frequent checkups with your vet to keep your cat healthy. There are shots and vaccinations that are standard and necessary for your cat. Do your best to keep the same vet for your pet’s entire life. This also allows the vet to become more familiar with your cat’s unique health needs and personality.

If your cat is getting older, you can increase it’s comfort by placing its bed over a heated tile. Simply heat a terra-cotta tile in a 200 degree oven for 20 minutes. Keep this underneath your cat’s resting space for extra warmth. Change it regularly if you need to.

Spay your cat as soon as she is old enough. While your cat may be an indoor one, there is always the possibility it can get out and you wind up with kittens one day. Spaying a cat can prevent this.

Do not use dog products on your cat. They can have very strong and possibly negative reactions to dog products. This will especially be true if it’s a product for fleas. Flea products that are intended for a dog can kill a cat. Make sure to separate your cat from your dog after spraying.

Think about getting a microchip implanted in your cat. Even a house cat may end up lost outside, no matter how careful you are. Tags and collars can help you cat return home, but cats can wiggle out of them or risk injury by snagging them on a tree branch or bush. Microchips are as tiny as a piece of rice and will tell people where the cat belongs. Scanners to read pet microchips are available in every town and they will not come out from under the skin.

A cat may not be just like a dog, but they are a great addition to a family. Cats often are better hunters than dogs. Use the tips above to care for your hunter pet.
